Friday 4 September, 12:30–16:00

Preparation, materials, and follow-up for the class on Friday 4 September 2026

How do you get your data into R?

In the this class, we will learn how to get data into R and how to organise data in files.

To prepare for the class today,

  • Read the Data import chapter in r4ds (R for Data Science book)
  • Watch a video on creating data objects using vector and data frames
  • Watch this video on importing tabular data from comma separated values (CSV) files and Excel workbooks
  • Watch this video on creating data files

What you’ll be doing

  • You will continue to learn the R language and practice entering commands in the R console and write scripts.

  • You will work through a document that shows you how you can get your data into R, and challenges you to use R to solve a number of questions.

Activities

Add links to whichever activity or activities are relevant to this meeting.

We’ve now covered the basic R commands and know how to both create small data sets within R and load data from files on our computers into R. In the next class, you’ll start to learn how to work with data within R, a process we call Data wrangling.

If there are are any topics that you are still struggling with, take a few minutes to rewatch the relevant video from the past classes or re-read the appropriate section in r4ds.

  • To recap topics we’ve covered so far, make sure you have read Chapter 2 and Chapter 7 of r4ds

  • Watch this video to recap any aspects of the R language that you found confusing. This is a longer video but you don’t need to watch it all in one go. I have added Chapters with timestamps in the description which you can use to jump to the main topics covered in the video. The chapters are also indicated on the progress bar if you hover over the video with your pointer.
